VOLVO, Renault, PSA (Peugeot-Citroen), Fiat, Volkswagi and British Leyland have signed a co-operative agreement ( advanced, long-term research within the field of automotil technology.

"It is the steadily increasing demands made on motor vehicles from aspects of energy, environment and materials that have brought the six motor vehicle manufacturers together to form a joint research committee," says Volvo. The agreement governing the manner in which the work will be organised and carried out, and how the resulting costs are to be shared, is currently being examined by the EEC authorities for approval.

The research work will be carried out within the existing research organisations of the partners to the agreement as well as by outside institutions such as universities and research institutes. No new joi research resources will be bu up.

The work group has alreac mapped out joint areas of int€ est on which the research will concentrated. Examples incluc combustion technology, corr sion, surface treatment, mot. vehicle batteries, quality co trot, computerised engineerir methods and the properties new materials.

The competitive situatio between the member con panies will not be altered sinc all final product developmer will be carried out individual and entirely outside of the ci operation project.
