INDUSTRIAL action by Shell-Mex, BP and Esso tanker drivers has been relaxed following a meeting last week between Mr Michael Foot, Employment Secretary, and the Transport and General Workers' Union and the companies involved.

Mr Foot is understood to have suggested that a Stage Three deal covering 10,000 tanker drivers could be supplemented by rises based on cost-of-living and productivity increases.

Dissatisfaction over a Stage Three deal led to some drivers refusing to take out fully laden tankers, banning overtime and sticking rigidly to speed limits. Steel production and petrol supplies to garages suffered.

Mr Foot's approval of cost-of-living and productivity increases is expected to encourage unions in other industries to seek pay boosts using similar tactics later this year.
