A LTHOUGH the prosecution con

tended that the carriage of stone in a lorry was concerned with the business of a builder rather than that of a manufacturer or repairer of mechanically propelled vehicles, Sleaford (Lines) Bench accepted a defence submission that Roy Lawson, garage proprietor, of Butterwick, Lines, was acting within the law in using a lorry bearing general trade plates to cart stone to be used to make a pull-in at his garage. The defending solicitor pointed out that the regulations stated trade plates could be used for any purpose connected with the 'owner's business as a manufacturer or repairer. However, Lawson was fined £2 for employing a driver without a driving licence, £10 for allowing a lorry to be used while uninsured (with endorsement of his licence) and ill for failing to have the unladen weight marked on the lorry. The 17-year-old lorry driver was fined £1 for driving the lorry without a licence and £5 (with endorsement of his licence) for driving while uninsured.
