THE problem of providing satisfacL tory transport for men and equipment within the same vehicle has been given thought by the Western Region of British Railways, with the result that two special outfits have been put into use by the signal engineer. These are based on the Karrier Gamecock chassis with Rootes two-stroke three-cylindered oil-engines and modified cabs.
The personnel compartment, capable of carrying 11 men in addition to the driver, is arranged so that it comes near the centre of the chassis, thus affording the best riding conditions. Foam rubber. covered with p.v.c., is used for the upholstery, and light-alloy framed sliding windows are fitted, two on each side.
The rear compartment, primarily intended for the transport of equipment, is fitted with flap doors at the top of the front to enable telegraph poles, ladders or similar lengthy articles to be carried with a special bolster arrangement at the rear to support and secure such toads. A hardboard-topped bench, fitted with cupboards and drawers, with electric lighting above, completes the interior furnishings. The complete body is panelled in light alloy and double-skinned throughout to prevent condensation. A lightalloy roller shutter blind enables the rear compartment to be locked when 'eft unattended.
