125 Companies Asked to Stagger Hours

A REQUEST has been made by the t—k Committee for Staggering of Working Hours in Central London to 125 big concerns in the West End and City to finish earlier or later than 5.30 p.m. on different days of the week. The object is to remove 32,000 workers from the peak of the evening rush of traffic which occurs at this time. Suggested finishing times are 4.30 p.m., 4.45 p.m., 6 p.m. and 6.15 p.m.
The committee also wish_ 33.000 employees of 180 other companies to finish work 15 minutes or 30 minutes earlier and start work at 8.30 a.m. or 8.45 a.m., instead of 9 a.m.
London has been divided into six zones, so that the tackling of the peakhour problem can be broken down appropriately. Plans have been launched in four of the zones, and so far 44 undertakings have altered working hours for 8,000 staff.
The first company to amend their business hours, the Kellogg International Corporation, have found it popular with employees. Previously they worked from 9 a.m.-5.30 p.m., but now they work from 8.45 a.m.-6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and 8.45 a.m.-4.45 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
