WHEN the Western Traffic Commissioners last week refused to permit Monarch Coaches (Bristol), Ltd., Speedwell Road, Bristol, to extend their summer season operating period, Mr. S. W. Nelson, chairman, said that if people wanted to take their holidays outside the recognized peak period they must either go by rail or another coach service.
"If we grant this application, other applicants will come along wanting licences for periods outside the one granted to Monarch Coaches, and so it will go on until the entire sun-irner is covered," he observed.
Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., who objected, were licensed to operate a substantial number of vehicles for a long period, and they were expected to cover the times when traffic was not so dense.
Mr. T. D. Corpe, for Bristol Tramways, said that there were still seats left in the company's coaches. "This is highly remunerative traffic for us and we need it to help out with less remunerative traffic periods," he said.
Monarch Coaches were allowed four additional picking-up points in Bristol, and to run an extra vehicle to Paignton and Weymouth on the Saturday before August Bank Holiday.
