Committee decided to apply at once to the West Midland Traffic Cornmissioners for increased fares. It is proposed to retain the 2d. minimum, but to restrict it to one stage instead of two. The present 4-d. fares would be eliminated. All workmen's fares would be increased by Id. '

Fears of a further increase in fares becoming necessary which were voiced by Sir Joseph Nall, chairman of Lancashire United Transport Co., Ltd., early last • month (The Commercial Motor, April 12), were confirmed last week. It is understood that the company are to apply to the North Western Traffic Commissioners for permission to raise single fares by Id. and return rates by 2d.

The Economic Bus Co., Whitburn, Co. Durham, have applied to the Northern Traffic Commissioners to retain the emergency fares.

Rochdale to Apply?

Rochdale Passenger Transport Committee propose also to apply for revi,ed fares.

Associated Motorways are seeking fare increases on express services from Birmingham to Weston-super-Mare, Portsmouth and Southsea. and Bournemouth. and from Walsall to Birmingham. It is proposed to raise single and period return rates by 5 per cent from Mondays to Fridays all the year round and on Saturdays and Sundays in the winter. A further surcharge of 12+ per cent, would be made on Sundays and Bank Holidays in the summer, and one of 22+ per cent. on Friday nights and Saturdays in the summer.

The East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd„ have applied to the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners to increase fares. The hearing will take place in a month's time.

In reserving their decision on the application of Ribble Motor Services. Ltd., to raise revenue by £194,000 a year (The Commercial Motor last week), Mr. F. Williamson, chairman of the North Western Traffic Commissioners, said they could not quarrel with proposals for a return of about 7 per cent. gross, or 4 per cent. net. For the time being the company would be allowed to retain the emergency increases introduced during the Suez crisis.

City of Oxford Motor Services, Ltd., last Sunday raised many fares by Id. The 2d. minimum remains, but covers two stages instead of three. A fare of 21d. is charged for three stages.

FARE RISE FROM 6s. TO 14s.

THE weekly fare between Glyn

Ceiriog, near Wrexham, and Mon Colliery. on the miners' service operated by Mr. L, G. Phillips, Glyn Ceiriog, has been advanced from bs. to 14s. by the North Western Traffic Commissioners.

As reported in The Commercial Motor on March 22, the Commissioners reserved their decision while negotiations were taking place with the National Coal Board about guaranteed payments to be shown on the licences for the colliery services.

The guaranteed weekly payment from the Board has been fixed at £33.
