A SUCCESSFUL year has been cx rt by Rotherham Corporation in the operation of its transport undertaking. After meeting loan charges and income tax, there is available a surplus on the working of the trolleybuses of 212,729, as compared with £10,723 a year earlier.

Receipts increased from 267,472 to 270,121. Loan charges and income tax absorbed 221,861, general expenses 27,049, repairs and maintenance 29,926 (a decrease), and power 28,222 (also a decrease). Including special expenditure, the total working costs amounted to .247.060 (8.02d. per vehicle-mile), as compared with 245,327 (8.49d. per vehicle-mile).

The operation of the motorbuses was equally satisfactory, the surplus having risen from £13,707. last year, to 214,860 in 1934-35. From this figure, however, 210,000 should be deducted on account of renewals.

The receipts rose from 265,422 to 00,127, against which have to be set traffic expenses at 226,372, general expenses 25,367, repairs and maintenance 210,256, and fuel 29,752 (a decrease, owing to the use of oilengined vehicles). On a vehicle-mile basis, the total working costs have been reduced from 9.40d. to 9.19d.

The number of passengers carried by the trolleybuses rose from 10,885,863 to 11,701,351 and on the motorbuses from 6,145,797 to 7,350,488. The trolleybus mileage increased from 1,282,331 to 1,358,785, and the motorbus mileage from 1,324,660 to 1,441,631.

120 k.p.h. WITH 240 h.p. COACH.

AN unusual 10-wheeled tractor-trailer coach has been added by the Magirus concern to the range of special passenger vehicles designed for service on the new German motor toads. The

B40 four-wheeled semi-trailer is permanently attached to the six-wheeled tractor and, despite the total overall length of about 18.5 m., the vehicle is stated to he easily manceuvrable.

Two separate six-cylindered oil engines, of a total of 240 h.p. (German rating), are housed under the bonnet, both engines being geared to one transmission line. The vehicle is stated to have a maximum speed of 120 k.p.h. and a cruising speed of 75-80 k.p.h.

The seats are mounted obliquely and each set of three seats can be converted into a sleeping berth for night travel. There is a partition between each group of seats.

SCOTTISH WORKERS STAND OUT FOR HIGHER WAGES.

THE ballot of the men employed by the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., regarding renewal of the existing agreement or a stoppage in support of the proposals of the Transport and General Workers Union has been completed. . Some 7,000 workers participated, and it is understood that a majority is in favour of taking action to enforce the demand for an alI-round increase of Id. an hour.

ANOTHER SOUTHDOWN DEAL.

THE express service operated by Mrs. Fuger between Warsasb (Hants) and London has been acquired, subject to the Traffic Commissioners' approval, by Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., which proposes to coordinate it with its London-Gosport service.

NO NEW VARIATION OF DRIVERS' HOURS

THE representations of seven associations of operators and employees to the Minister of Transport for the variation of public-service-vehicle drivers' hours under Section 19 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, have failed. On the advice of the Industrial Court, the Minister has decided to renew for two years, as from to-morrow (June 1), the variations already allowed, but will not sanction further extensions. The new Order will be known as the 'Road Traffic Act, 1930 (Variation of Provisions of Section 19) Order, 1935.

CROSVILLE INCORPORATES PEARSON SERVICES.

ON May 25, Crosville Motor Seri..../vices, Ltd., definitely incorporated in its schedule the London-LiverpoolSouthport services hitherto operated by Messrs. J. Pearson and Sons. There is no alteration in times and route, except that Victoria Coach Station is substituted as terminal for King's Cross Coaching Station. The Liverpool: Blackpool service operated by Messrs. Pearson, as well as that operated by Mrs. S. S. Wilson and Harrison's Motor Services, have now been acquired by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.

DUNFERMLINE TRAMS TO GO.
