at the Cleansing Conference
Over 20 Manufacturers are Taking Part in the Demonstration of Municipal Motors at the Public Cleansing Conference at Newcastle on June 6
AVALUABLE and interesting feature of the annual conference of the Institute of Public Cleansing is the demonstration of special municipal vehicles and appliances, which is to be held, this year, at Newcastle, on Thursday. June 6.
On this occasion, more than 20 concerns are taking part, and a fine display of hygienic refuse collectors, embodying the latest features in design, will be on view. The municipal field is to be well covered by the inclusion of gully and cesspool-emptying machines, and street washers.
Messrs. William Bunce and Son, Ashbury, Swindon, are to show snow ploughs designed for attaching to tho front of commercial vehicles. These outfits have also proved useful for removing shingle from promenades and sea roads.
Au exhibit of particular interest will be the Carrimore gully and cesspitemptying equipment mounted on a Vulcan 2-ton forward-control chassis. This machine is to be exhibited by Carrimore Six-Wheelers, Ltd., High Road, London, N.12, and a feature is that the tank is interchangeable, with a refuse body. Particular attention has been paid to the accessibility of the contkokr. The vacuum in the tank is created by means of a Climax rotary exhauster, 5, patented feature of which is the ingenious manner M. which the rotor is housed to eliminate wear on the blades, , Tapered Floor Assists Discharge.
Commer Cars, Ltd., Luton, is to show a 7-cubic-yd. refuse vehicle having as its basis the 2-ton longwheelbase chassis. Dustless loading is effected by steel sliding covers, and the floor of the body is tapered and steellined. End tipping is effected by a hydraulic gear.
An example of its 7-cubic-yd. refuse body will be shown by the Eagle En gineering Co., Ltd., Warwick. The body is provided with a detachable top, B24 so that the vehicle may also be used for highways work. The three covers on each side are of the steel sliding type. Hydraulic tipping gear of the concern's own manufacture is provided, and a feature of the body is the provision of a night-soil tank.
Four vehicles are to be displayed by Dennis Bros., Ltd., Guildford. Two Of these machines are gully-emptiers, one being of 600-gallon capacity and the other of 700-gallon capacity. The smaller machine has as its basis the forward-control Municipal model, and the larger machine the normal-control chassis, having a wheelbase of 11 ft. Further exhibits will be two refuse collectors, is 10-cubic-yd. side-loading machine and a 12-15-cubic-yd. vehicle arranged for rear loading and equipped with a moving floor.
A heavy-duty battery-electric refuse collector, built by Electricars, Ltd., Lawley Street, Birmingham, is to be the sole representative of this class of vehicle. The machine to be exhibited has a six-wheeled chassis with a load capacity of 4 tons, and is operated by Birmingham Corporation. An electrohydraulic tipping gear is provided and the body, which is of composite con
struction, is a product of the Electricar concern.
In addition to a new pattern of orderly truck, Hygienic Refuse Con tainers, Ltd., 39, Victoria Street, London, SAVA , hopes to show a refusecollecting vehicle with H.R.S. dustlessloading covers specially designed for use with the Ochner bin.
A three-wheeled combined sweeper and refuse collector is to be exhibited by Johnston Bros. (Contractors), Ltd., 35, Crutched Friars, London, E.C.3. The machine is powered by a fourcylindered engine, the drive to the road wheels being by means of spur gears. The sweeping and collecting device consists of a main brush, collecting scoop, refuse bin and channel brush, The machine is equipped with a sprinkling device and has a capacity of.50 gallons.
The outstanding exhibit of Karrier Motors Successors, Ltd., Huddersfield„ will be a 3-ton refuse collector, the chassis being a new model known as the C.K.-3, and fully described elsewhere in this issue. Other vehicles to be shown include an R.S.C. sweepercollector, a Colt three-wheeled 400gallon gully-emptier, two Bantam 7-cubic-yd. refuse collectors and a CobSix tractor with a van-type refuse collecting semi-trailer of 18-cubic-yd. capacity equipped with a Principality moving floor.
Trailers for Tractor Haulage.
Whilst the exhibits of Messrs. Alex, Laurie and Sons, Falkirk, will comprise a number of horse-drawn refuse vehicles, one four-wheeled outfit, mounted on pneumatic tyres, is easily adapted • for haulage by motor tractor by fitting a drawbar in place of shafts. Incorporating a Bedford 2-ton chassis, an interesting machine is the Lewin waterless sweeper-collector, to be shown by Lewin Road Sweepers, Ltd., Jack Lane, Leeds, 10. The patented brush can accommodate itself to any reasonable road camber. A tandem channel brush is also provided, and the sweepings are carried into a righthand and left-hand spiral. chamber, delivering by means of a vertical elevator into the body of the container. A neat hand-controlled sweeper-collector, powered by a 2i h.p. two-stroke-cycle engine, will also be on view.
Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham, 8, will have available an example of its 2-ton forward-control chassis equipped with a 7-cubic-yd. refuse-collection body. The end-tipping gear gives a tipping angle of 40-45 degrees, and streamlined wheel-arches prevent obstruction to the refuse when tipping. The body platform is steel-lined.
Metal Construction Reduces Weight.
An example of the Principality moving floor will be shown on a vantype refuse body, mounted on an Albion chassis, winch has been built for Perth Corporation by the Princi
polity Wagon Co., Ltd., Cardiff. An interesting feature of the body is that by the extensive use of duralumin the weight has been reduced to under 27 Cwt. Further examples of this popular moving floor will be found on a Thornycroft machine with an Eagle 12-15-cubic-yd. body, a Karrier tractortrailer outfit with Principality 18-20cubic-yd. body and on two Vulcan 3-ton refuse-collectors.
A novel self-loading refuse body, of
a type in use in Paris, is to be exhibited by M. Fernand Rey, 18, Avenue de la Celle Saint Cloud, Garches (S. and 0.). The body consists of a totally enclosed box with cable-operated tipping gear. At the rear is a small hopper into which dustbins are emptied, the sides being low so that the bins may be emptied into it from
street level. At the bottom of the hopper is a flat steel plate, moving continually backwards and forwards under the influence of a hydraulic ram. Refuse falling on this plate is pushed forwards through a slot into the container body.
• A New Scammell Model.
The Scammell Trivan refuse collector to be shown by Scammell Lorries, Ltd., 52-54, High Holborn, London, W.C.1, is based upon the popular 3-ton mechanical horse. A feature of the all steel, rear-loading body is the provision of a Transport manually-operated moving floor. The tailboard is of patented design and is made in halves. The top half is equipped at each end with rollers, upon which it is able to move vertically in a channel at each side of the back of the body. Operated by a handle, the tailboard is raised until the lower half comes into contact with fixed points, which throw it out horizentally, for the discharge of the load. Other exhibits of this concern will include its 1,200-gallon street-washing machine, a 780-gallon gully-emptier and a 12-cubic-yd. refuse collector. A 3-ton mechanical horse provides the motive power in each case.
The Scam=11 mechanical horse also provides the tractive unit of the latest Fowler trailer-type gully-emptier to be displayed by John Fowler and Co. (Leeds) Ltd., Leeds, 10. A feature of the outfit is that the vacuum is created by means of a separate engine mounted on the trailer, making the gullyemptying apparatus a self-contained unit. A patented system of separating the,waier from the sludge enables the refuse to be sent to the tip in a semidry condition.
A Large Display.
Seven examples of S.D. Freighter are to be shown by Shelvoke ankl. Drewry, Ltd., Letchworth. These include Chelsea-type refuse collectors, to be shown in two sizes, two canvascovered refuse vehicles and two rearloading refuse machines with patent moving floors. The display will be completed by a 700-gallon gully and cesspit-emptier.
The special AA. Forward chassis for low-loading vehicles is to be exhibited by John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., Thornycroft House, Smith Square, London, S.W.1. It will be seen equipped with an Eagle 14-cubic-yd. all-steel refuse-collection body, and is equipped with a Principality moving floor. The four-cylindered engine develops 50 b.h.p. and the .reserve of power available makes this type of vehicle particularly suitable for work under difficult conditions.
Two refuse collectors are to be displayed by the Vulcan Motor and En&ineering Co. (1906), Ltd., Cans. acne, Southport, both incorporatingthe 2-ton forward-control low-loading
chassis. One is a 10-cubic-yd. rear loader, incorporating a Principality moving floor, and the other is of the dual-purpose type, with detachable top.
n2ti The well-known Pagefield system of refuse collection will be represented by a special Q-type forward-control vehicle, equipped with a Gardner 4-L.W. oil engine. Examples of the canopy container, which is horsedrawn and used in conjunction with the lorry, will be shown. Walker Bros. (Wigan), Ltd., is also exhibiting the Pagefield Prodigy chassis equipped with a 15-cubic-yd. inside-loading body.
The popular Transport moving floor is to be shown by the maker, Transport Engineering, Ltd., 561, Old Kent
Road, London, S.E.1, incorporated in a 12-15-cubic-yd. all-steel rear-loading refuse body, a feature of which is the unusual loading step and tailboard design. The body is mounted on a Dennis .3-ton chassis.
A neat gully-emptier, mounted on the Bedford 3-ton short-wheelbase chassis, will be displayed by Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Luton, It is equipped with a universal screw-tipping gear and has a tank capacity of 600 gallons. The rotary-type exhauster has threeway valves, so that the tank may be used under pressure or vacuum. A second exhibit of this concern will be a TO-cubic-yd, refuse vehicle with an all-steel body having Eagle fOotoperated dustless covers.
The conference opens on Monday next and in the evening of that day delegates will be accorded a civic reception by the Lord Mayor of New-. castle. On Tuesday the new president, Mr. T. Robinson, will be installed, and following the presidential address a paper will he read, eptitled "Street Cleansing To-day," by Mr. Gavin G. Arthur.
On Wednesday morning delegates will hear a symposium of essays on the subject of refuse disposal. The annual dinner will be held at the Royal Station Hotel in the evening. Thursday will be taken up vith the exhibition of municipal vehicles, as previously mentioned, and on Friday two important papers will be heard in the morning, and will be followed, in the afternoon, by a visit to the Benwell refuse disposal works.
