Despite recent disposals of large numbers of vehicles, used van prices are set to carry on rising

Words: Steve Banner STOCKS OF second-hand vans could begin to run dry nationwide by the start of June as demand booms, says West Sussex-based Shoreham Vehicle Auctions MD Alex Wright.

Far from swamping the market, light commercials disposed of as a result of the recent closure of a number of big rental leets have been snapped up by eager buyers, he says. “Used van prices will carry on rising.” Indeed, used light commercial prices, as a percentage of the new price, will hit some of the highest levels ever seen, he predicts. Among the big sellers are the medium-weight panel Volkswagen Transporter and Renault Traic, Wright says. That is because they are the ideal size for the trades, such as electricians, carpenters and plasterers – people who may have postponed replacing their existing van during the recession and are now looking for something a bit newer.

Also in demand are 3.5-tonne tippers as new examples haven’t sold recently, making used ones hard to ind. ■
