Worldwide interest pushes sale into record-breaking territory

Manheim Auctions broke its own record for the highest bid when it sold a crane for more than a quarter of a million pounds.

The Liebherr eight-wheel cable crane sold for 2266.000 (ex-VAT) at a dedicated plant sale in Leeds, marking the highest bid in 60 years and smashing the company's previous record of £88,000, for a 2003-regsitered iveco Belarus coach sold at Gloucester.

HGV and plant manager Jeremy Martell started the bidding at £100,000 and raised it £20,000 at a time, much to the surprise of some regular customers who had never experienced such rises.

At its most fierce, bidding included 15 potential buyers from Trinidad, Greece and Ireland. Two of them battled it out on the home stretch before a final £1,000 bid sealed the vehicle for an unnamed buyer. By the following Monday it was on-site in London with its new owner.

Martell was approached by XBG Fleet Remarketing to evaluate the crane; it subsequently decided to use Mannelm Auctions for disposal.

"There will never be another one in our lifetime," says a Manheim spokesman. "The crane was f irst registered in 2001, only had 700 hours of working time on its clock and was in immaculate condition.

"These types of crane rarely come up for sale at this age and condition, hence the interest from buyers around the world.

"Bids started at £100,000 and kept going to £266,000. Bearing in mind the crane would have cost around £375,000 new, both buyer and vendor were very satisfied with the result."
