Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Not only light but very, very strong.

Roughly every ten seconds somewhere in the world a big commercial jet lands its several hundred tons on a set of aluminium wheels.

Usually it's all very smooth. But the wheels have to be enormously strong in case it isn't.

That's why they're forged.

In fact, most of them are forged by Alcoa in the same plant as our range of wheels for trucks, trailers and buses. The design is different but the huge built-in safety margin is the same.

For example, our truck wheels are made in one piece so there are no welds that could fail in a heavy impact. And they have a thicker disc that easily withstands severe lateral stresses in an emergency turn. As a result, many operators find our wheels last much longer, even in tough, off-road conditions. And with 38 years of experience we're confident enough to give each one a five year warranty.

Although it's probably the weight savings you're interested in (over 300 kg on a 14 wheel vehicle) it's good to know that aluminium wheels are also extremely strong. Provided they're forged.
