• Postplan, the central London parcels carrier, which last month vowed to bust the Post Office's letters monopoly with a 225 million expansion throughout the UK, has been bought by parcels giant Interlink for £180,000.
Postplan claims to be Britain's only private postal service because it charges lower rates than other parcels carriers. It says it could take on the Post Office — even in rural areas — if current restrictions on private postal companies were lifted.
1nterlink, which has 100 branches in the UK, says Postplan will keep its identity as a separate subsidiary and will expand outside the capital. "Our objective for Postplan is to introduce the service into every major town and city. . . providing an attractive alternative to the Post Office," says Interlink chairman Richard Gabriel.
