• Retailer Wm Morrison is centralising its frozen food deliveries in a £7 million contract with Alpine Refrigerated Distribution — part of the National Freight Consortium.
The operation will run from Alpine's distribution centre at South Kirkby, West Yorkshire, and deliveries will be made overnight, allowing frozen food cabinets to be refilled before the stores open.
Alpine will serve 38 Morrison stores from Tyne and Wear to Lincolnshire, using a dedicated fleet of a dozen 16tonne rigids and artics with 24pallet trailers. These include three new lveco Ford tractive units. The store group plans to open 12 outlets over the next two years handling over 1,000 product lines.
Alpine was formed in January 1987 after NFC bought Alpine Refrigerated Deliveries and the distribution operation of Birds Eye Walls. It is a joint venture between the employee-owned NFC and Union International.
