• Specialist advice has been published this week on how bus design can be improved to help elderly and disabled bus passengers.
The report, from the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, is called Features on Buses to Assist Passengers with Mobility Handicaps. It brings together research data and practical experience on features such as step heights, route number and destination boards, indicator sizes and location, handrail positions, lighting levels, seating layout and bell push design.
The information forms the basis of a recommended specification on bus design, which has been produced by the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) and the DTp.
Junior transport minister David Mitchell says: "The TRRL report and the DPTAC bus specification highlight the features that make bus use easier not only for disabled people, but also for the large number of "encumbered" passengers."
"The DPTAC bus is a practical demonstration of these measures, and shows what can be achieved at a cost that we believe could be recouped inside a year from the increased numbers of people that would be able to use it. I hope that both the report and the draft specification will be widely read and acted upon by local authorities and transport operators."
