• Despite speculation that it could be selling Bedforddesigned bus and coach chassis in the UK from the end of the summer, Bedford-owner AWD now says that it will not reenter the PSV market this year.
AWD sales and marketing director Peter Wragg says that the UK bus and coach market is "not a major priority_ Our main priority is to reintroduce AWD to the domestic truck market from 7.5 tonnes upwards," but he adds: "We shall look at the bus and coach market with a view to possibly coming back in 1989."
The decision not to return sooner will come as a disappointment to many PSV operators and dealers. Many feel that the demise of the competitively-priced, basic specification Bedford coach chassis has left a hole in the market which has yet to be filled, despite the launch of models like the Dennis Javelin.
Among the models originally expected to reappear were the Venturer and YNT, the YMPS eight-metre chassis and even the JJL integral midi.
If former Bedford PSV models do appear, however, they are likely to lose their old Bedford engines, in favour of a new driveline featuring proprietary engines, probably from Perkins and Cummins.
