Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Simplarc is the name given to welding equipment developed by Rowen-Arc for vehicle repair which can be operated by unskilled labour and is said to have many operational advantages over the stick-electrode type. Its designation in the official specification is the MIG CO2/Argon welder and it comprises a power source, control and wire feed in one compact unit.

The operator measures the thickness of the metal to be welded and then selects the correct welding routine by inserting a plug into one of three sockets on the control panel. The main variables of semi-automatic welding—wire feed speed and welding current voltages—are predetermined by automatic control circuits and thus the need for manual adjustments requiring special skills are eliminated.

The welder is suitable for dip transfer welding mild steel from 0.9mm (20 swg) thickness upwards with carbon dioxide or argon gas mixtures shielding a continuous feed or wire electrode of 0.8mm (0.030in.) diameter.

It operates from a standard 13amp power socket and uses one standard wire size, the wirefeed drive system being contained within the casework of the equipment. The unit is marketed complete with a lightweight torch and there is an auxiliary gas supply for a CO2 heater. Other features include a cabinet mounted on castors; the equipment is easily moved single handed. As a means of minimizing service and maintenance time, the majority of wirefeed control circuits are contained in a single plug-in module and a plug-in relay which are readily accessible.

Operator training is unnecessary and the machine is said to provide • a higher throughput of work than stick-electrode equipment. Moreover, electrode wastage is eliminated and the unit can be easily moved from one work area to another. The equipment has been specifically designed with the small to medium-sized vehicle repair shop in mind. And it is claimed that users can easily recoup captial costs within a year. A Simplarc hire service is available at competitive rates. Made by : Rowe n-Arc Ltd, Apex Road, Brownhill, Walsall, Staffs.
