Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Automobile Engine Lubrication is probably the most comprehensive book of its kind to be published in the U.K. in recent years and it may be regarded as essential reading for any engineer, student or maintenance technician to whom an understanding of engine and vehicle operations is a priority requirement.

The author is Prof Alphonse Schilling, of the French Institute of Petroleum, and the book is Vol II of Motor Oils and Engine Lubrication. it is published by Scientific Publication (Great Britain) Ltd, Broseley, Shropshire, at £10.

A long section on the "examination of oil during running" gives chapter and verse on methods of oil checking that enable engine life to be prolonged at minimum overall cost. And the 10 chapters include data on running conditions and the effects of variables that are strictly related to practical considerations as well as technical concepts applicable to diesel and petrol engines. One chapter relates to engine running temperatures, and studies are made of types of piston failures that are well known to the majority of maintenance personnel. Chapters on bearings, filtration, oil consumption, deposit formation and wear cover practical aspects of the subjects in a technical way that is easily digested.

One appendix covers established methods of classification and specification and a second appendix outlines the 'effects of operating on lead-free petrol.

It is a scientific book that does not confuse with science. And the long lists of references indicate multifarious sources of information of special value to the research

and development engineer. P.A.C.B.
