Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Berlin Congress.

The tenth annual assembly of the German Professional Fire Brigades Association, due to take place at Berlin from the 13th to 16th June, will The Wallsend Tenders.

Quotations for the supply of a motor tender and escape, to fill the requirements of the Borough of Wallsend, must be lodged on or before tomorrow, the 1st April. with Mr. W. V. Mulcaster, Town Clerk of Wallsend. at 28, Sandhi11, Newcastle-onTyne.

Surbiton's Claims.

Further to the paragraph in our issue of last week, under the heading of " Surbiton Contented," a local resident informs us that Surhiton . people are by no means inclined not to move in the matter, and that there is every reason to believe that a separate brigade will he demanded. furnish an occasion for a grand parade of all the self-propelled wagons and engines located in " Gross-Berlin " (Berlin and suburbs). This parade, the venue for which is the Doberitz military road, will fittingly wind up the extensive programme of events.

Sheffield's Move.

The Watch Committee of the City Council is now receiving tenders for a petrol-motor fire-engine. Full particulars and forms of tender, together with conditions of contract, may be obtained at the office of the Chief Constable, Sheffield, on payment of the sum of 10 shillings, which will be returned on receipt of a tender.

Merton's New Engine.

As already reported in this journal, the Fire Brigade Committee of the Merton U.D.C. purchased a. motor fireengine from Merryweather and Sons, Ltd., of Greenwich, Tondnn„ S.E., and this machine, which was installed earlier in the month, is shown by us with its crew on hoard. According to Superintendent V. S. Wells, who is in charge of the Merton' brigade, the engine is at present sufficient for the neighbourhood, which is very flat, and in the main covered with new buildings. which will hardly be involved in a serious conflagration. The new engine is one of the Merryweather standard type-s; it is propelled by a 24-30 h.p. motor; the pump at the rear is of the treble-barrel " Hatfield " pattern and capable of throwing 200 gallons of water per minute with a pressure of 85 lb. to 90 lb. The vehicle can attain a speed of 20 to 25 m.p.h. on the level, and can average 16 m.p.h. A case, slung amidships, carries some 1,000 ft. of canvas hose, as well as standpipes and other apparatus, whilst, for dealing with small outbreaks, one of Merreweather'a " Kemik " cylinders of 30 gallons capacity is fitted in the rear.

Superintendent Wells, who was quite enthusiastic about the successful first demonstration made by this machine, appears to be a hereditary firefighter ; his father was in charge of the brigade at Margate.
