Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Oliver Dixon The UK 6x4 tractor marketplace is not a big place; at around 3% of the parc, they're not exactly a common sight. The same can be said for Seddon Atkinson's share of the UK tractor business. Last year, the Oldham-based lveco subsidiary accounted for less than 20 additions to the UK fleet. But times change.

Seddon Atkinson now makes its machines in Madrid, and the company is focusing its efforts on the waste and construction transport sectors, which is why the wraps were thrown off a Seddonbadged 6x4 unit at this year's Chartered Institute of Wastes management show.

The new tractor bears the generic Seddon Strata designation but is, save a badge on the front panel and the rear bulkhead, an Iveco Eurotrakker. However, the new machine is available only from Seddon's 14-strong dealer network. On this basis, even if it is an exercise in badge engineering, if you can only buy it from a Seddon dealer, then Seddon it is.

Power comes from a Cursor 13 engine producing up to 440hp between 1,540-1,900rpm and 2,100Nm of torque between 950-1,360rpm. This is complemented by a Eurotronlc 2 transmission, offering 16 either fully or semi-automatic shifts.

At the front, a Menhir 5886 I-beam axle with oil-filled hubs takes the weight. At the back, a 452191/2D hub reduction double-driven bogie puts the power onto the road surface. Cross and inter-axle diff locks are standard, while suspension is parabolic at front end and parabolic cantilever steel at the back.

Braking comes courtesy of 436mm ventilated discs at the front, and 410mm diameter duo-duplex drums at the back. Bumper-to-bumper length works out to 6.625m, with a front overhang of 1.44m and a back end sitting out 7B5mm. Overall, the Strato's wheelbase measures 3.2m, with a rear bogie spread of 1.38m. Without a wet pack, but fully fuelled and with driver, total weight is 9,320kg. The Strato uses a low-roof Eurotrakker cab. Standard are air-conditioning, night-heating, air-suspended seat, exterior sun-visor and roof beacons, and a three-piece steel bumper.
