• The Transport Minister was last week asked to consider increasing the subsidies paid to bus operators, so as to reduce the need for further increases in fares.
Mr Michael Heseltine, the Parliamentary Secretary, told the questioner, Mr Harry Gourlay (Labour, Kirkcaldy), that there were no plans for this. And Mr Peter Thomas, the Welsh Secretary, last week rejected as unnecessary a conference with local authorities to discuss the preservation and improvement of rural bus services.
But, he added, any local authority was welcome to approach his Department about particular services which were causing it concern.
