• Pay increases of up to 15 1 Os a week on basic rates are being sought by Scottish lorry drivers, The claim has been made to hauliers by the Scottish Commercial Motormen's Union and involves around 12,000 road haulage workers.
Thc present basic for the men concerned is 119 lOs a week for driving vehicles of 21 tons and over. For lesser tonnages drivers are scaled down, as is the claim on ^these rates.
The union is also asking for a third week's holiday and improved overtime rates.
Negotiations for a merger between the Scottish Union and the TGWU are nearing the point of decision by the members themselves. The next step is consideration of the proposal at branch meetings, which could be concluded by the beginning of October. A ballot of the membership on the link-up is the final move.
