TWO NEWLY created players in the buildings materials market are on the hunt for subbies.

Hope Construction Materials is looking to recruit subcontractors in the coming months as the business shifts into gear.

The company came into existence earlier this month after Tarmac owner Anglo American and Lafarge completed the sale of a number of assets demanded of it by the Competition Commission to Mittal Investments, enabling its UK joint venture to go ahead. Mittal has in turn created Hope Construction Materials.

A spokesman for the firm told CM it had around 400 trucks to call upon, with a significant amount of subcontractors haying effectively transferred their services across to the new company.

He added it would likely be looking for more as the business developed. "We'll be meeting our transport needs as a business with the usual model for the sector, with contract hauliers running for us in liveried vehicles," he said.

Newly formed joint venture Lafarge Tarmac has launched its own push for contract hauliers, offering would-be subbies a fixed contract, preferential payment terms and even help with purchasing a vehicle.
