There may be some owner-drivers working for Tarmac Northern who resent having to buy additional safety kit including mechanical sheeting systems and CCTV reversing aids (see story, page 8) . They shouldn't. Transport is a place where people can get killed, and tippers have a way of attracting trouble like jam attracts hungry wasps.

A cynic might point out this is merely Tarmac's way of protecting itself against the advancing spectre of Corporate Manslaughter. But then the definition of a cynic is someone who thinks they know better than everyone elseā€”and can't accept that they don't.

Making road transport a safer place is a goal everyone in the industry should aspire to. Given the number of accidents within road haulage it's depressing that people still need to be told that artic tippers should never raise their bodies on uneven ground. But human nature being what it is, well...
