HGV drivers in the East Hands will be getting an :ra 20p an hour under a nt Industry Council (JIC) .eement signed last week.
The Road Haulage iodation (RHA) and the import and General rkers Union (T&G) also 'end on a 4% rise for warefse staff.
This will put drivers on an average of £5.20 an hour, equating to an average of £208 a week based on a 40-hour week: 16-year-old apprentices will start on £88 a week.
T&G senior regional industrial organiser Alan Tiplady says: "While we accept that this was the best we could get through negotiations it is still a long way from the £10 per hour we hope to achieve by the time the Working Time Directive (WTD) is introduced.
"At the moment, to get a decent wage drivers are doing up to 60 hours a week and this will be impossible when the WTD is enforced. Haulage has a major shortage of drivers and the rates must increase to attract new drivers and to stop those we have got leaving in droves."
