• Proposals to slash almost £300,000 from the Northamptonshire road budget have prompted a backlash from local hauliers.
They have joined local Conservatives in attacking plans to cut spending on resurfacing secondary roads by 2286,000 branding it as "highway robbery".
A petition being circulated throughout the county states that the condition of roads is not just a local disgrace but a danger to life". it demands an end to cuts in highway maintenance.
Shadow minister for local government, Malcolm Moss, is said to be preparing to table a question in the Commons to fine out if similar measures are planned In other parts of England.
Local haulier and RHA board member Bernard Howard is backing the campaign: "Haulers in Northampton are very concerned. Roads are breaking up, potholes are everywhere. These roads are our workplace. Health and safety should be paramount."
