Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new company, BASF Coatings & Inks Ltd, with five divisions, formed to serve the growing coatings and inks market, is backed by the big chemical company BASF. Its automotive refinish division supplies paint systems for automotive and commercial refinishing suitable for all sorts of bodyshop, under the separate brand names of Glasurit, Inmont and Valentine.

Gtasurit claims market leadership in two-pack solid colour and base coat metallic systems for use in low-bake conditions. It also has a range of pearl effect paints. The lnmont range has hightech products for both air-dry and low-bake. These include single-pack acrylic, two-pack acrylic and base coat metallic systems.

Valentine is a leading brand for air-dry nitro-cellulose and synthetic enamels, and, has a wide range of products for commercial vehicles.

The new company incorporates all the surface coatings, resins and printing inks operations of the BASF Group in the UK.

The products previously sold by these companies will now be marketed under their brand names by different divisions within BASF Coatings & Inks. Its other divisions cover automotive OEM finishes, container coatings and industrial and building products. BASF Coatings & Inks employs around 1,100 people and has annual sales of 75 million. The company merges businesses with a considerable range of complementary skills and products to create a major new force in the UK coatings and inks industry. Brand names include: Glasurit, Valentine, lnmont, Herbol, Dr Beck, Fishbum and K & E.

The merger follows a series of acquisitions by BASF over the past few years.

BASF Coatings & Inks is a wholly owned subsidiary of BASF Lacke & Ferben AG, which is in turn a subsidiary of BASF Aktiengesellschaft, the parent company with headquarters in Ludwigshafen, West Germany. The BASF Group is a multi-national operation with production facilities in 35 countries and business interests in over 160.
