the 5.1100 North East bus workers will call off tomorrow (Saturday) the overtime ban they have been operating in protest against the rejection of a national wage claim last October. The claim will be presented again at a meeting of the National Joint Council for the bus industry on February 3. The 5 000 busmen are employed by the Northern General group.
Hull Deficit: The Hull City transport committee was told last week that by next year the transport department would. be £88,250 " in the red ". Mr. F. L. De Boer said it was difficult to see how it could be changed. The undertaking started in 1963-64 with a £29.736 deficit and the loss during the year was 1:19.931, although it had been expected to he £48,000. It was expected that the total detieit at the end of next March would be £49.667 and in the following year the loss was expected to be £38,583.
London Dispute Settled : The threat of a new Han on overtime by London busmen was finally lifted when the busmen's negotiating committee accepted a formula agreed between the London Transport Board and senior union officials. Under this the 800 ni rnd women who had between 4s. and 6s. withheld from their pay for keeping on the lest overtime ban for two days longer than the rest of the fleet, were to get the mou-v triter all. In return the union withdrew its threat to reimpose the ban. Keighley-West Yorks Results: A profit of £18.844 was made by the Keighley-West Yorkshire Services Ltd. in the year ended September 30 last, Keighley Corporation benefits by half this amount---£9,422—compared with 1.12,733 in the previous year. Traffic receipts and other income, less operating, management and general expenses, totalled C72.913 (£63,933).
Holiday Extension : Barton Transport Ltd. of Beeston. Notts, is to extend this year's holiday period to three weeks for more of the company's 1,000 employees. Previously this was granted only to employees with more than 15 years' service, but the new qualifying period for all staff will be 10 years.
Leeds Development: The scheme put forward by Mr. T. Lord, general manager of Leeds City Transport, for equipping about a dozen buses with radio-telephones (The Commercial Motor. January 31 is to be submitted to the transport committee next month. The buses would he used on main routes at peak times and the possibility of having specially selected drivers to man them is to be discussed with the busmen's union. Last week the chairman of the transport committee reported that passengers carried by the undertaking had increased by nearly 2-2m. over the past nine months. The Leeds rehousing programme would, he said, call for extra bus services and in the next seven Years the Ileet might have to be increased by 150 hirs-s on this account.
Managers' Meeting: The annual meeting of the managers' section of the Municipal Passenger Transport Association will he held at the Carlton Hotel, Great Yarmouth. on May 27 and 28. Yarmouth Corporation transport undertaking will be host to the managers.
Cheaper by the Dozen: A 3d. minimum fare —with tickets cheaper by buying 12 for 2s.— has been suggested for the Grimsby and Cleethorpes .joint transport undertaking. People prepared to prepurchase multi-journey tickets would get cheaper rides as opposed to casual passengers who used the buses only in inclement weather. The transport committee will consider the suggestion. Despite a rise in income of more than ,E23,000 in the nine months ended December 31 last, compared with the same period in the previous year, the undertaking will have an estimated deficit of £3,320.
Long Service With M. and D.: More employees of the Maidstone and District Motor Services Ltd. qualified for 40-year long service awards (24) last year than for 25-year awards (20). Amongst those presented with 40-year awards last week was Mr. I. D. Palmer. the company's secretary. whose 40 years includes service with the Southdown and Ribble companies as well as the M. and D. The long-service stall now totals 585. representing about one fifth of the total employees.
