IN the light of higher speeds and weights the whole question of the brake efficiency of commercial vehicles should be reconsidered. This was urged by a delegation from the highways and vehicles committee of the Road Haulage Association, led by Mr. A. C. W. Neely, vice-chairman of the committee, who met Mr. H. Perring, chief engineer, Ministry of Transport, and other Ministry officials in London last week. The R.H.A. representatives acknowledged that improvements could not be made overnight but suggested that as a long-term objective both of the independent means of operating brakes should be more or less equal in efficiency. (The principal complaints from operators have concerned the low efficiency of some handbrakes. See also page 37,) The Ministry has asked operators to help by lending laden vehicles for tests on airfields to study current standards of braking performance.
The meeting, at which the Traders Road Transport Association was also represented. was described as cordial and helpful.
