Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In view of the nerd for the erection of kerbside petrol pumps, and the advice which was recently given to the Nottingham City Council by the town clerk to the effect that, such appliances could not legally be erected without statutory authority, it is interesting to note that the C.M.U.A. had previously suggested to the Roads Department of the Ministry ef Transport that when legislation is in

troduced dealing with motor vehicles a clause should be inserted authorizing local authorities to give permission for the erection el kerbside petrol pumps.

At the same time, the association drew the attention of the Ministry to the provision contained in the Bolton Corporation Bill for the purpose of enabling the corporation to authorize the erection of kerbside appliances for the supply of water to steam wagons, and urged that an early opportunity should be taken of extending such powers to all local authorities.

The Bolton Corporation is to be congratulated on being the first local authority to seek this power, and will undoubtedly agree with the C.M.U.A. iu its desire that the power shonld be of general "applica tem.
