• Described as a step towards reducing urban pollution by exhaust fumes, Tokyo's municipal transport undertaking plans to put four diesel-electric buses into service in the city, on particularly congested routes, next July. The buses, built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, will be 80-seaters and will use a conventional diesel engine running at the best settings for efficient combustion, driving an electric generator /motor system for traction, It is claimed that tests have shown a reduction of about one-third in hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen and othe pollutants compared with normal diese exhausts.
If the new buses prove successful it service it is expected that some of Tokyo' "moth-balled" diesel buses will be converte( on the same pattern, but• the Tokyr Metropolitan Government has announce( that the diesel-electric is regarded as only al interim step on the way to electric power fo urban passenger vehicles.
