RE YOUR ARTICLE headed Sheet Lightening (CM 10 August).
Harsh has spent much time and money testing aerodynamics and the savings in fuel consumption. The testing at MIRA was carried out in 2000 (CM 19 October, 2000): the results were confirmed at the 2003 BTAC Trials.
We have proven the highest improvements are made simply by covering the empty bodyTippers spend a lot of time empty and the drag coefficient is considerably higher when the amount of space in the body is at a maximum. A 16% fuel saving was recorded when testing an empty vehicle with front-end tipping gear. Minimising the cab back gap with underfloor tipping gear gave an average 3% saving over front-end tipping gear.
