THE DVLA PLANS to overhaul the rules for LCiV drivers suffering from notifiable medical conditions.

DVLA spokeswoman Linda Weaver says a consultation document will he out by the end of the year in preparation fora change to the law governing people with medical conditions who want to hold on to their driving licences.

As the law stands, any drivers with certain medical conditions must inform the DVLA. A doctor will then carry out a medical examination to confirm they are safe to be behind the wheel.

The review will look at the rules for all medical conditions for car and LGV drivers, she adds.Ti

will go through everything, incl uding conditions surrounding diabetes such as those taking insulin, and those who need eyesight checks."

Currently. LGV drivers over the age of 45 must renew their licences every five years and a medical is part of that process.

• The Professional Drivers Association (PDA) has launched a discussion forum on its website along with information about health conditions. Trustee Pat Nicholson says: "We're finding that a lot of drivers are having illnesses and are concerned about where to go for information and whether or not they have to inform the DVLA:' Contact: wvvw.pda-tik.org
