Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• New guidelines to help employers improve the driving standards of their staff are being promoted by the road safety campaign group Brake.

It has published an information sheet which can also be used to assess potential recruits and keep tabs on existing staff.

The guidelines include: • Rewarding good drivers with prizes and better career prospects; • Using records of accidents and near misses to monitor each employee's standard of driving; • Using computer tests supplied on CD-ROM to check specified driving skills; • Identifying the training needs of drivers every time they are assessed; • Stopping anyone who fails to rectify his driving defects from staying behind the wheel; • Regularly interviewing drivers to ensure they have a positive mental attitude to the job.

Brake highlights the example of an Exel Logistics depot in Derbyshire where a driver improvement initiative cut vehicle accident damage by 89% in seven years.

The information sheet is available free. Contact: Brake on 01484 559909.

• The long-term unemployed in Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire are to be given the chance to win HGV licences. The project, called Driving New Deal, is sponsored by a public/private partnership including NFT Distribution.
