Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• SKF has launched a range of kits to convert non-driven axle hubs from grease to oilbath lubrication. Extended bearing life is predicted, the company claims, because they are better lubricated, run cooler and include an inspection window.

Most bearing problems arise from a lack of lubrication caused by poor maintenance or seal failure, says SKF. These problems have inhibited the widespread use of oil-filled hubs despite reduced drag and, potentially, longer life.

Lip seals often fail as when there is a slightly rough surface or incorrect installation. On an oil-filled hub such failures could lead to oil getting onto the brake linings.

SKF uses a "cartridge" type oil seal made by CR Industries, with an interference fit on the shaft and in the housing. The required movement occurs between the two interlocking parts and seals one on another, so giving a clean, smooth surface.

Kits, available for all trailer axles and most steered axles, include two taper roller bearings, oil seal, end cap with inspection window, a socket wrench to remove the fille plug and the correct quantit! and grade of oil. The taper rol ler bearings can be adjust& without disturbing the main oi seal.

Those fitting the new hul can have oil from the hub: analysed by a major oil com pany, and unless this show: any problem, the hub can safe ly be left untouched.

Trials with London Brick in dicate that a strip-down take 15 minutes less than on grease-filled hub. Circle turb4 70 for further information.
