Borough Council has been granted unrestricted renewal of authority to operate nine vehi des from its Thorne depot by North Eastern Deputy Licensing Authority John Hampton, despite a petition from 104 residents.

The DLA reserved decision in July after a number of residents gave evidence about the unsuitability of du access road, claiming walls and a parked vehicle had been damaged. They expressed concern about danger to pedestrians and corn plained about being disturbed in the early hours boj vehicles being started and by bad language.

The council said there had been a depot in West Street, Thorne since 1925, and it had been licensed for seven vehicles, with two tc be acquired, since 1986 (CM 3-9 August 1989).

In a written decision, Hampton said it was plain that the residents did not want the depot to remain 4 West Street, feeling that it was no longer suitable in a residential area. However, there had been no allegations of injury to pedestrians, nor of excessive speed by vehicles. He concluded that the limited widt of West Street and the limitations of visibility at th bend imposed their own restrictions on drivers.

Although some residents had been inconvenienced b heavy vehicles taking up most of the road width ow Temperance Bridge and I)) plant being delivered or re moved on low loaders, Hampton said he could not take this into consideration when deciding whether the use or enjoyment of the representors' land was affected.
