L'IVF. double-deck buses on Thames Trader chassis have been prepared under Ministry of Transport auspices to carry cyclists and their bicycles on a• shuttle service through the DartfordPurflect tunnel under the River Thames; the tunnel is to open next year, The special bodywork by Strachans (Coachbuilders), Ltd., provides passenger accommodation on the top deck only, while cycle racks are fitted in the opensided space on the lower deck. The upper deck is reached by staircases on each side of the vehicle just behind the front
wheels. Although recessed access steps are provided from ground level, the staircases proper start well above the ground, at a height designed to coincide with loading platforms-at each of the tunnel approaches. The layout is shown in the photograph above.
