NEWCASTLE'S NET PROFIT NEARLY DOUBLED.

THE yearended March 31, 1934, marked the 21st anniversary of -the bus services of Newcastle Corporation, and, in that year, the vehicles were operated at a gross profit of £61,314, this figure being reduced to a net surplus of £18,222 (as contrasted with £7,411 a year earlier), after providing £48,093 for loan charges, income tax, etc. The surplus is carried to the reserve and renewals fund, which, at the end of March last, stood at £44,265. In the past year the revenue on the buses totalled £213,548, working expenses having amounted to £152,233. The aggregate mileage covered was 3,953,982, and 25,733,769 passengers were carried.

The municipal bus services have made much headway in the past few years, and progressive increases in traffic receipts, the number of passengers carried and miles operated have been recorded. At the end of March last the corporation owned 112 buses, A.E.C. and Daimler vehicles forming the major part of the fleet.

INCREASING PROFITS AT 13111KENHE AD.

FINANCIAL results of the past year's working of the buses of Birkenhead Corporation reveal a gross surplus of £65,073, as contrasted with one of £62,006 in the previous year, the perbus-mile comparison being 3,71d. and 3.63d. respectively. The actual balance on the revenue account was £63,338, income having totalled £232,446 and working expenses £169,108. After deducting interest, sinking fund and income-tax charges, the net surplus amonnted to £24,973, which is higher by £2,545 than the figure for last year.

Daring the year ended March 31, 1934, the buses covered an aggregate mileage of 4,198,688, and carried 29,162,450 passengers. Although the corporation owns 121 buses (mostly of Leyland make), the average number of vehicles in use per day was 09. The buses operate on a route mileage of 310.49.

DUNDEE'S BIGGEST SURPLUS. DTJNDEE Corporation made a gross profit of £17,019 from the operation of its buses in the year ended May 15, 1934, revenue having totalled £102,107 and working expenses £85,088. Interest

B38 and debt redemption charges reduce the surplus to £6,650, which compares with a deficit of £3,830 a year earlier; the net profit is the largest returned in 13 years of bus operation, The aggregate mileage covered by the buses was 2,212,040, and they carried 15,570,38S passengers. At the end of the period covered by the report, the corporation owned 85 buses .(mostly Leylands), 29 of them being doubledeckers.

SOUTHAMPTON'S GOOD YEAR. DURING the year ended March 31, 1934, the 45 buses in the service of Southampton Corporation were operated at a gross profit of £7,815, revenue having totalled 1160,105 and ex

pencliture £52,290. After deducting interest charges of £1,651, the balance to be carried to the appropriation account is £6,164.

In the past year the buses covered an aggregate mileage of 1,104,107 and carried 7,413,213 passengers, both figures being appreciably higher than the returns for the previous year. At the end of March last the capital expenditure on the bus system amounted to £70,814, the loan debt outstanding being £28,609. The corporation, which commenced the operation of buses in December, 1901, now has 23 Guy, 16 Thornycroft, three A.E.C. and three Leyland vehicles.

TROLLEYBUS ADVANCEMENT AT IPSWICH.

THE municipal passenger-transport services at Ipswich are maintained by trolleybuses and, in the year ended March 31, 1934, the vehicles were operated at a gross profit of £16,988, but interest and loan charges, amounting to £11,386, reduce the balance to £5,649, after adding bank interest. There was a further capital charge of £3,180. in respect of superseded tramways, which, deducted from the surplus on the buses, gives a net balance on the year's working of £2,469. This sum is transferred to the reserve or renewals account and compares with a similar appropriation of £660 in the previous year.

In the past year the revenue on the trolleybuses was £75,081, whilst working expenses totalled £58,093, these figures on a per-bus-mile basis being 11,66d. and 9.02d. respectively. The trolleybuses serve an estimated population of 89,000, and, during the year, carried 13,325,285 passengers, the aggregate mileage being 1,544,213. At the end of the period under review, the corporation owned 47 trolleybuses, mainly of Ransorne and Garrett makes, although the average number in use per day during the past year was 33. At the end of March last the gross capital expenditure on the system amounted to £173,694.
