BUS SEASON-TICKET PROPOSAL AT GLASGOW

New Scheme of Daily and Season Tickets to Operate Shortly BUS season tickets, at a charge of 3s. per week, are included in a schenie of season and daily "all in" tickets on the Glasgow transport system which was recommended for adoption on August 22 by the general purposes sub-committee of the corporation transport committee. The scheme, if ratified, will have to come before the Traffic Commissioners in so far as it alters municipal bus fares, hut it is hoped that it will •be in operation in about six weeks.

The details of the scheme include a week's ticket for 3s. between any bus terminus and the centre of the city; express bus services from housing schemes to the centre of the city; reduction of the minimum bug fare in the city from lid. to Id. for a single stage, and the adoption of an " all in " day ticket, at a cost orls., which will be issued on any day of the week, including Sunday, and will permit the holder to travel by bus, tram, or subway.

Advocates of the scheme claim that it will go far towards wiping out the deficit on the bus section of the municipal transport undertaking, which amounted last year to £42,000. and is estimated at £15,000 for the current financial year.

The most far-reaching of the innovations recommended is the introduction of the 3s, weekly fare between bus termini and the centre of the city, a step which, in conjunction with the provision of express buses at the rush hours, is calculated to lead to a considerable increase in the use of the buses by those travelling regularly to and from business.

The proposal runs counter to the advice of the general manager, who, in a report submitted fortnight ago, expressed himself as against any further alteration of the bus fares, stating that, in particular, he could not advise the issue of season tickets. In his report, Mr. Mackinnon suggested that the lowering of the minimum bus fare to ld might be considered, and he visualized the introduction of a Is. ticket on Sundays only, and a 6d. ticket for evening tram travel. It was pointed out that the 1s. fare recommended will apply only to the normal bus, tram, and subway services, and will not be available for the corporation bus tours.
