FAMILY haulage company und themselves before the mth Wales deputy Licensing uthority, Ivor Pugh, in Carif after after the 13th GV9 and one ,nviction for overloading rer the past 15 months.

Gordon Williams, company cretary and a transport i.nager, of Williams Haulage Gwent, said it was the sole .T.ans of livelihood for himIf, his father and uncle.

If the present fleet of 11 units and 10 trailers was reduced, they would find it extremely difficult to continue economically because of the high operating costs.

Many of the faults found on the vehicles were for black smoke, cut tyres and light failures. "Our work is mainly taking coke to foundries in the Midlands with return loads of coal or scrap and a lot of damage to the tyres and lights is caused by the bad conditions at sites we go to," Mr Williams continued.

They had now issued instructions to their drivers to examine the tyres before they began their journeys, particularly on return trips and, if any faults were found, they had been told to call in a tyre firm.

C. Rosser John, for the company, said they had now reduced their period of inspection from four to three weeks in view of the nature of the work the vehicles were involved in.

"I ask you not to reduce the operating fleet. There are three families living off it and it will cause great hardship. Eleven of the 13 prohibition notices did not indicate negligence.

The deputy said maintenance needed tightening up. "But I am prepared to accept your explanation and will leave you with the 11 vehicles and 10 trailers. The prohibition notices will remain on the file."

The company's licence, which expires in October 1980, is for 18 vehicles and 13 trailers.
