LEICESTER'S municipal bus undertaking
showed a trading surplus of £155,298 for the year ended March 31 1966 according to the accounts published this week. The annual report states that revenue from the 1965 fares increase rose at a greater rate than the operating costs for the first nine months of the year, but the 40-hour week and the service bonus scheme, both of which commenced towards the end of 1965, caused a steep rise in operating costs and for the last three months of the year the undertaking was running at a loss.
The report states that in an attempt to combat the crippling effect of traffic congestion on the regular spacing of peak-hour services, an experiment was carried out in central control by RT/ Television. "This has proved to be more successful than was thought possible," the report reveals. "The credit for this is due to the co-operation of the Transport and General Workers' Union, the inspectorate and the crews. We are pioneers and as such have had to work out systems and write instruction books.
Bedford-Dupkis for Ulster-bus: An order for 70 Duple 45-seat service coaches, for completion next April and worth around £250,000 has been placed by UTA. They will be built at Blackpool on Bedford VAM 14 chassis and will be the first intake for the new Ulsterbus Ltd.
