I NCREASES of -34. in most West
Hartlepool Transport Department single fares were approved last week by the Northern Traffic Commissioners. The adjustments were expected to bring in an additional £18,000 a year, the Commissioners were told.
It was stated that during the year ended March 31 last, the undertaking had a surplus of nearly £17,000, but this would be swallowed up by the latest wage award.
Granting t h e application—which included some fare reductions and the abolition of returns—the chairman of Commissioners; Mr. ..T. A. T. Hanlon. said it was doubtful whether reduced fares would induce a reluctant public to travel on routes to such an extent as to recover the losses being entailed by granting the reduced fares.
Increases of id. and Id. on Southport Transport Department fares were authorized by the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Southport last week. The deputy town clerk, Mr. P. P. BaileyBrown, complained that . the British Transport Commission, in spite of the losses incurred by British Railways, was 'following Me policy of depressing its fares below those of the corporation. There had been a decline in passengers as well as increases in costs, said Mr. Bailey-Brown. It was obvious that the undertaking could not meet all its commitments.
The Scottish Traffic Commissioners last week reserved their decision on an increased-fares application by David MacBrayne, Ltd. The increases sought varied from Id. to is. on single fares.
Mr. J. R. Cameron, assistant traffic manager (road transport), said that the company's planned modernization of its fleet would involve higher depreciation charges in the early years.
RURAL TRANSPORT ATTACKED
THE manner in which people in country districts were isolated was unforgivable, stated the annual report of the Cumberland Parish Councils' Association, published last week. The isolation, it alleged, was due to poor transport facilities.
LONDON CHAMPIONS AGAIN D EPEATING their performance of 1959, London Transport (central road services) have again won the Wakefield-Dick shield for the National P.S.V. Undertakings Cricket Competition. The other finalists were Manchester Transport Department, who were the beaten finalists last year as well.
SUCCESSFUL CITY TOURS
0 city tours, to places of special interest, operated by Liverpool Transport Department during the summer months were again very successful this year. it was announced this week. A total of 17,500 passengers was carried by the two services, and receipts amounted to £1.850.
