Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THERE was a shortage of hauliers who 1 were willing to take loads to remote areas of Scotland, Mr. J. Booth told the North Western Licensing Authority, Mr. F. Williamson, when he presented an application by P. McCallum and Sons, Ltd., Bannockburn, Scotland, at Liverpool on Tuesday. Over the past year the earnings of the company had increased by £17,500, and to deal with the extra work they were asking for six articulated units of a total unladen weight of 30 tons on their A licence. These units were to be on the Widnes licence and based at Barrow Green Garage, Derby Road, Widnes.. _ The applicants, continued Mr. Booth, were part of an organization, Peter McCallum and Sons, Ltd., comprising five haulage companies. The 29 vehicles were based at London, Bannockburn and Widnes, working as one large fleet. Operational schedules submitted showed an increase of iI7.500, £5,000 of this being paid to sub-contractors. The main customers of McCallum were .Turners ASbestos.Cement, Ltd., of Widnes. They were unable to deal with all the traffic offered to them and many complaints had arisen regarding hired vehicles.

• Mr. Peter McCallum, managing director, stated that he controlled the five companies comprising Peter McCallum. .and Sons, Ltd. Recently they had been forced to hire extensively to -deal with all their traffic. If they wanted a load delivered

to Edinburgh or Glasgow, there was no difficulty in obtaining a unit. But if the destination was in the Highlands they would probably be unable to acquire one.

Replying to Mr. 5. Edward Jones, objecting for the British Transport Commission, Mr. McCallum said they employed at least 40 sub-contractors. He admitted that an application for six additional vehicles had been lodged in the Scottish traffic area, but said he was not in a position to say what the situation would be if the present application was granted.

Mr. J. Kellock, the company's chartered accountant, said that the earnings from Turners Asbestos over the past year totalled £52,906. The case is to be continued.
