A VEHICLE destined for use in 4C-'1. Greenland, and thought to he the largest produced in Britain for operalion north of the Arctic Circle, was recently shipped by Scammell Lorries, Ltd., Watford.

The outfit, which consists of a Scammell Mountaineer 4 x 4 prime mover and Dyson straight-frame semi

trailer. is suitable for a payload Of 30 tons, The latest version of the Meadows 6.DC630 oil engine is used in the prime mover, which has a six-speed gearbox incorporating a transfer box, and power. assisted steering. In view of the conditions under which the vehicle will he operated. ether cold-starting equipment and an anti-freeze unit for the airpressure braking system are included.

As well as being specially insulated the cab has heating and demisting equipment.

Provision is made for converting the prime mover into a dump truck. To this end, the cab is offset to the left to provide greater visibility for reversing when the dump body is fitted. To effect the conversion, the fifth-wheel turntable is removed and the tipping gear and the dump body fitted.

Special care was taken in designing the semi-trailer to ensure the c o rrect superimposition of the load on the prime mover. It was contructed for carrying loads of ore on pallets, the platform body, which has a 3-in.-thick hardwood floor, being 24 ft. long by 8 ft. wide.
