Two Towns AS a first step towards nationalizing passenger transport in Singapore; the Singapore Government have appointed a Transport Commission to advise on the development of public transport on the island.

The Commission have as their chairman Mr. L. C. Hawkins, a member of the London Transport Executive. The other members will be drawn from the local Ministries of Communications and Works, Local Government, and Lands and Housing, and the city council. The Commission will have power to co-opt members and to call for evidence.

At present, about half the bus services on Singapore Island are provided hN the Singapore Traction Co., and the remainder by some 10 private Chinese companies of varying size. THE East Midland Licensing Authority has authorized the abolition of workers' returns on bus services operated by Grimsby and Cleethorpes Transport Departments. They will be replaced by concession single fares which will be available only until 8.45 a.m.

A request for permission to add /d. to all fares on Sundays was refused because the Authority was not satisfied that the proposal was equitable. The increase of id. in the fare charged on football specials, and a rate of Is. on dance -specials. were also approved. The new rates. which will apply to both motorbuses and trolleybuses, will probably take effect on October 9.

Mr. E. W. Ward, deputy town clerk of Grimsby, said that if the current wage claim were granted the corporation might have to consider asking for a further increase in all fares. Last year there was a deficit of £11,844 on the Grimsby undertaking, and a loss of £15,000 was expected this year and next.

A spokesman for. Cleethorpes Transport Department said that although every possible economy was being made, the undertaking was being run at an estimated foss of f5,000461100 a year. Next year's deficit was expected to be £5.760.
