THE ROAD TRANSPORT industry has suffered because of a lack of investment in Britain's road and rail infrastructure since the Labour Party came to power 10 years ago.
That is the finding of a damning piece of research, which claims the Government has overseen an increase in traffic congestion and ignored the need for investment in Britain's railways.
It also accuses Labour of being good at talking about transport improvements, but far less adept at actually delivering them. The book, called Traffic Jam: 10 Years of "Sustainable" Transport in the UK has been timed to coincide with the 10-year anniversary of the Labour White Paper A New Deal for Transport.
Professor Jon Shaw, one of the co-authors and director of the Centre for Sustainable Transport at the University of Plymouth. tells CM: -Where we are now is where we were in 1998, but with 10 years of traffic growth.
"Road hauliers are having a bad time because of the lack of investment in allowing for the movement of freight on the roads and the railways."
Chris Lawrenson, managing director of Roadway Container Logistics, adds: "Rail has allegedly been the answer for freight transport. but the infrastructure is not there to get trucks off the road.
Michael Gough, senior partner at AE Gough & Sons, adds: "The Government knows they can keep hammering us and Toe Public isn't going to get too upset about it.
