FRENCH FERRY company LD Lines is planning a recession-defying expansion of its cross-Channel RO-RO services in the next year.
The company, a subsidiary of Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, has already won permission for a new service between Dover and Boulogne, which will start next July. It also plans a Dover-Dieppe service for January and wants to double capacity on its existing Portsmouth-Le Havre route in November by introducing a new ship.
A spokesman says the company remains optimistic that demand for cross-Channel ferry services will stay robust. He adds that the longer routes will provide truck drivers travelling between the UK and Spain or Portugal the opportunity to spend the night in a cabin on the ship.
LD also believes that extra capacity is needed across the Channel in areas other than the Dover Strait, where incidents sometimes lead to a high volume of traffic being blocked.
