noise from tyres on dry and wet road surfaces.
As stated in CM last week, the report says that the Ministry of Transport is developing a procedure to test stationary vehicles which will be applied at heavy goods vehicle teating stations and that the measurement of individual vehicle noise at the roadside is not easy.
Summarizing the research that has taken place, the report says that the most important source of noise on current production vehicles is the engine and the "over-square diesel engine fitted to many heavy lorries" is the noisiest of all engines. And it adds that while a 10 dB(A) reduction in engine noise is possible in the "long term" by radical redesign of the engine structure, short-term reductions can be obtained by total enclosure of the engine and transmission, although cooling problems and the space limitations will prevent the use of this palliative on many models.
