Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MONG several new trailers pro duced by Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., Carrimore Works. North Finchley, London, N.I2, a semi-trailer designed to cater for palleted loads is of particular interest.

Braced by a central cantilever member, the light-alloy roof is unsupported at the sides, giving free access for side loading with fork-lift trucks. It is carried at the four corners on screw jacks attached to the head and tail boards, which are overlapped by the ends. Each screw jack carries a sprocket at its lower extremity, and an endless roller chain passing round these sprockets and through guide tubes is connected to winding gear mounted on one side. of the trailer main frame. Movable jockey wheels enable chain tension to be adjusted.

During loading the roof is raised on the jacks to give the required clearance, height being limited to a maximum of 9 ft. 6 in. When the load is in position, the roof is wound down to touch the tops of the pallets. It will clamp them securely provided that the load is more than 6 ft, 6 in. high. Canvas side curtains running on Coburn rails enclose the load,

Loading space is 26 ft. 2 in. hy 7 ft. 51 in. at a height of 3 ft. 10 in. and the 'designed payload is 5 tons. The sprung axle carries twin wheels. with 7.00 by 20-in. (10-ply) tyres. Braking is by Girling 14-in. by 3-in. units vacuum operated through a compensator linkage.

The forward end of the trailer is supported on a standard Carrimore fifthwheel hitch and carries retractable jockey legs.

A second addition to the Carrimore range, a six-wheeled unit built for overseas, is unusual in having unsprung axles. Of 25-ton capacity, the trailer is 35 ft. long and 3 ft. 9 in. wide and will be used for transporting assembled road-making plant. The well stands 3 ft. If in. above the ground and gives 28 ft. of clear loading space.

The 1-section longitudinal, members are each built up from two 2-in. by 101-in, rolled-steel channels placed back to back and plated at the top and bottom. The forecarriage is mounted on a special holste'r block running on a steep-angle tapered-roller bearing, and the rear bogie comprises two independently pivoted balance beams having stub axles on which the hub bearings are mounted.

Twin wheels are used throughout and carry 9.00 by 20-in. (12-ply) tyres. Allwheel braking is provided by Girling by 5-in, units air-pressure operated from a reservoir through two pipelines in conjunction with a relay emergency valve. The hand parking brake operates on the front wheels only.

A third new trailer, designed specifically for transporting ORB excavators, is notable for its frame, in which the longitudinal members are arranged in the form of a triangle, the apex terminating in the attachment for the forecarriage. The members are 1-section rolled-steel joists 6 in. by 12 in. and are upswept at the rear to take the rigid axle.

Bolsters welded transversely to the longitudinal members support the underside of the excavator, and stops are provided to prevent movement in transit.

The eye to Which the forecarriage is connected by a detachable, vertical pivot pin is free to turn about the axis of

the trailer. Twin wheels are used at the front and rear and carry 10.00-20-in. (14-ply) tyres. Girling 151-in. by 5-in, brake units are fitted at the rear only and are operated by hand wheel for ,parking.

Safety chains are provided.

Another recent Carrimore delivery comprised two 25-ton eight-wheeled trailers of only 5-ft. 6-in. wheelbase. They are being used for internal transport, the load being metal dies for pressure body panels. The wheels are arranged in pairs and four in line at the front and rear. No springs are used, but each pair of wheels can oscillate in a transverse plane.

Six 6-in. by 3-in. steel-channel members are used for the longitudinals of the frame, being braced by four cross-members of • the same section. The floor is a 1-in. steel plate bolted in position. The turntable is supported on a double-row ball-hearing.

All the tyres are solid and of 20-in. by 9-in. section. Carrimore also built the wheels, which are fabricated from steel plate.

The overall length is 9 ft., overall width 5 ft. and the height to floor level 2 ft. 6 in. All the fabricated components are electrically welded.
