The West Bridgford Municipal Authorities Seeking Increased Powers for Operating Buses.
IN no part of the Midlands have motorbus developments proceeded, within a recent period, at a greater rate than-in the territory in which Nottingham and Derby are the main centres. The Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd., with its headquarters in the latter town, may fairly claim to have led the movement of expansion, covering by its admirable co-ordinated services most of the important "districts in the two counties, as well as extending its operations into.' parts of Staffordshire.
A further substantial addition to arrangements in relation to Nottingham itself is foreshadowed by the notices which have now been given by the West Bridgford District Council, of the intention to promote a Bill in the ensuing session of Parliament seeking powers to run buses into Nottingham. This is in accordance with terms of an agreement made with the corporation, enabling the development of bus traffic between the city and the suburban districts to be effected upon a reciprocal basis.
At the same time the Bridgford Council does not propose to circumscribe its activities to this inter-municipal compact. Although, apparently, for a long time not favouring the use of motorbuses the Nottingham Corporation has recently been driven by the trend of events to amend its policy, with the result that bus services, have now been established between Beestou, Ilucknall and many of the intervening places, the needs of which have become more pressing by reason of their situation at points remote from the tramway system.
The responsible committee of the municipal body, however, still manifests its confidence in the less flexible means of transport, but with the great growth of private bus enterprise, which is apparent upon all sides in the city and the district, it has become apparent that the corporation will be driven to amplify its present policy in relation to motorbuses.
The Bridgford Council has, apparently, no doubt about enhancing the SILCCCFS which has already attended its enterprise, as, in addition to seeking authority by its projected Bill to enter into arrangements with the Nottingham Corporation, it proposes to obtain powers to extend its own bus services to the neighbouring residential centres of Edwalton, Garnston and Wilford.
